Lunar Development Base

The Interplanetary Land Development Company (ILDC) is pleased to announce they have been awarded development rights to the newly discovered planet Donner, with a moon, Blitzen, in the Sun's solar system. This momentous discovery provides the ILDC with a unique opportunity and we are currently seeking scientific experts in planetary development to partner with in the cultivation of these new resources. Ultimatily, the ILDC must choose whether to begin development on Donner or Blizten.

The ILDC is funding space flights to research and then develop either the planet or the moon. Each scientific team will be given seed money to plan a trip to Donner or Blitzen and conduct research. The team that develops the best proposal for their development based on the resources found on the planet or moon will be fully funded. Some questions that the executives of ILDC suggest you investigate and include in your proposal are:

  • What is the topography of the surface?
    • Where is it safe to land and to build?

  • What minerals are available for mining? What resources could be cultivated?
    • How will ILDC profit from this venture?

  • What is the atmosphere like? Are there any native life forms?
    • What will be the challenges to the workers on our new outpost? Can they live there, breathe, and move?

Each scientific team will be composed of 3 to 4 planetary development experts and will create a proposal for the further exploration and development of either Donner or Blitzen. The scientific team that creates the best proposal for the development of either the planet or the moon based on the available resources will be fully funded to carry out their mission and be awarded a culinary bonus of a catered oven baked flat round bread covered with a tomato-based sauce and mozzarella cheese (other toppings may be added according to team preference).

Project Proposal

In order to create a project proposal that will be considered by the ILDC your scientific team will need to complete the following research tasks:

Phase I - Reconnaissance and Surveillance Data Analysis

Phase II – Initial Exploration Proposal

Phase III – Sample Data Analysis (of samples taken during Initial Exploration Flight)

Phase IV – Final Proposal Document

Phase V – Mission Specialist Certification Exam

The Details

Phase I - Reconnaissance and Surveillance Data Analysis

Using the data that the ILDC has already obtained from satellite observation of Donner and Blitzen you will complete a Surveillance Data Analysis Sheet. This information will be used in Phase II to write a proposal for an exploration of Donner or Blitzen.

Phase II – Initial Exploration Proposal and Flight

Based on your team’s data analysis your team must make a choice. You may either explore the planet Donner or its moon Blitzen. In your Initial Exploration Proposal your team should include:

1. Describe what question(s) about the planet or moon you are attempting to answer and your initial goals for the development of Donner or Blitzen.

2. Provide evidence from your reconnaissance and surveillance mission to justify the type of exploration you want to carry out. (Use at least 2 items from your Data Analysis Sheet).

3. Your scientific team must have a company name and logo.

4. Turn in your Initial Exploration Proposal to the ILDC. Launch priority will be assigned based on the quality of your proposal and the time it was received.

5. Initial Exploration Flight to Donner or Blitzen. One member of your team will join the ILDC on its initial exploration and collect samples for Sample Data Analysis. At the same time, your scientific team will help the ILDC continue its advanced research into the effects of crater impact on planetary bodies.

Phase III - Sample Data Analysis (of samples taken during Initial Exploration Flight)

Your scientific team will analyze and interpret the data you have collected. The ILDC will assist you to run several tests on the samples your team obtained during the Initial Exploration Flight. These test will include:

1. Soil tests for evidence of life
2. pH of liquid samples
3. Reactivity of Metals and identification
4. Spectral Analysis of the Atmosphere
5. Microscopic signs of life in liquid samples

As your scientific team performs these test you should keep detailed records of your findings and discuss how your team will use this information to convince the ILDC to grant your team the partnership for the control of the development of Donner or Blitzen.

Phase IV – Final Proposal Document

Your scientific team must file a final proposal based on your analysis of the Reconnaissance and Surveillance Data Analysis and Sample Data Analysis with the ILDC. In the proposal your team will propose how you will develop Donner or Blitzen and best utilize its resources. Your development proposal must be supported by the data you collected. The best proposal will be awarded the partnership, the fame, and the culinary bonus.

Phase V - Mission Specialist Certification Exam

All members of scientific teams are required to take the mission specialist certfication exam in order to be certified as a expert in planetary development. This exam will cover the scientific knowledge needed to explore and develop planets in and outside of our solar system.
